Abstract

Education is considered a driving force for nations' progress and development. Means of technological progress and the information revolution witnessed by the world in the third millennium at all levels have  imposed burden on the various forms of education to keep up with the rapid developments of knowledge and communication means. Distance education is an educational  type that have arisen from the use of the technological development of information and communication in learning process, which is a relatively new method of education. It has become a part of the developed and the developing countries education systems, thanks to its strength that can contribute to promoting economic and social development.
The global interest in this type of education has arisen from the tremendous developments that occur in the field of information and communication technology on one hand, and from the urgent need to update human working resources skills on the other. Because technology has become communities' active tool to achieve human development in a global economy based on knowledge, it has become possible quick access to information sources through networking facilitated and beyond geographic and cultural boundaries of different communities, and even exceed those limits even within the same society with its various classes.
That has made distance education a tool used by officials, educators, trainers and decision makers in all communities' working sectors to achieve society progress, because of its many advantages in various fields. However, this type of education , just like other education forms, is facing challenges and obstacles in achieving its expectations and targets.
The present paper deals with the concept of distance education, its features, the obstacles and challenges, whether they are  technological characterized by the failure to adopt a credit standard for content development, technical characterized by the privacy and the ability to penetration, or educational characterized by the non-participation of educators in the preparation of this type of education, and then the paper presents solutions and suggestions to overcome these obstacles in order to achieve this non-traditional type of education targets, towards ongoing learning process.
